Analysis in Azure Blue Bhezuth

[Flight Record]

Diminutive in both length and stature, here's a figure who might well be underestimated at first glance. Inky hues of midnight cloak his hide, rendering him particularly well-suited for moving through shadows, movements quick and light. Headknobs, a bit shorter than what one might expect, cap off his tapered head jauntily, set well above protruding ridges and keen, brilliant eyes. Neckridges and spars gleam razor-sharp, blue-black like the curved talons that fit seamlessly with each of his paws. Smoke swirls down his strong chest and under the curve of his belly, the same hint of grey that curls thoughtfully among membranous wingsails, drifting away to disappear into his dark, spaded tail-tip.

Egg Name and Description

Dance of the Fans Egg
A rhapsody of cheerful, enchanting colors spills smoothly over the shell of this rather small egg, hues changing from one inch to the next in a perpetual whirl of delight. Bright, canary yellows blend merrily into bold sweeps of fuchsia and cherry reds, swirling up into the gallantry of a thousand dancers in motion. Splashes of color curve into shapes that resemble some of the finest fans that the traders in the north have to offer, tiny dollops of bejeweled pinks and greens sprinkled atop.

Hatching Message

The cheerful shell on Dance of the Fans Egg is completely torn asunder, ripped apart by a sudden rending of talons as the inky creature within spills out onto the sands, giving a startled squawk. This is not the way he calculated his entrance, not at all!

Impression Message

Lights explode into your mind, fast-whirling spirals of nearly every color imaginable twirling and spinning and pulling you right along with them. « You. » A spark leaps forth as you bond with this dark hatchling in front of you - suddenly, you can feel the whirring of another mind, the way his thoughts leap from one to the other in quick succession. « My name, my dear Taira, is Bhezuth. Quite simple, isn't it? » A pause, then, as he considers something equally important: the hunger that tears through him, and now you. « I suppose we should find something to eat before we continue. »

"He was pacing the room swiftly, eagerly, with his head sunk upon his chest, and his hands clasped behind him. To me, who knew his every mood and habit, his attitude and manner told their own story. He was at work again."

He's sometimes cold, arrogant and not very nice. He's not the handsomest or the fanciest flier. He's also brilliant, mischievous and a keen adventurer.

Enter Bhezuth, a dragon whose penchant for escapades will not only amount to an interesting weyrlinghood, but make for a busy time afterward. From your first moments together, he's particularly keen on investigating everything. The oil vats, the meat vats, the way the barracks are setup — the grass tufts in the bowl, the way the lake moves, the manner in which people and dragons move throughout their day: all of these things fascinate him to no end. « Look, Taira, see that talon mark on the edge of the vat, just there? Someone was just here before we were. The question is, who. »

A creature of observation and habit, Bhezuth is a perfectly rational creature from birth, a dragon with a rather remarkable sense of intellect and a keen eye for details. He's well aware that rushing straight into things may not produce an ideal result - or even a good one. He's methodical and orderly in his reasoning and generally, what he says as a youth makes sense - most of the time. « I surmise, my dear Taira, that what you are eating is enjoyable to you. You are happy and it smells - sweet. »

In his interactions with others, Bhezuth maintains a certain distance, holding himself apart from them even as a weyrling. It's not that he doesn't like his siblings and their riders, but he doesn't expect that any of them should be able to understand his thought process - and even if you don't, he'll find it difficult to tolerate the company of others that you choose to keep. While nowhere near as possessive as Lijenth may grow to be of his, he'll still prefer that you and he take trips together alone in plenty, just the two of you on a day off to Boll to figure out how certain avians nest or a day at the Woodcraft so he can learn all about the different types of paper and how to recognize them with your input. Little things like these, to him, are important.

"All emotions, and that one (love) particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise, but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen - but, as a lover, he would have placed himself in a false position. He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer. They were admirable things for the observerexcellent for drawing the veil from mens motives and actions. But for the trained reasoner to admit such intrusions into his own delicate and finely adjusted temperament was to introduce a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all his mental results."

When Bhezuth is grown and greens begin to rise, he'll find himself reluctantly driven to chase. To say that he is incapable of loving isn't exactly precise — after all, he loves you, even if he finds it difficult to express it in precisely those terms. Where most males find utter disappointment in failing to win a flight, he'll be able to shake the loss off much more easily than most. In the case that he does win, the (un?)fortunate green won't find any declarations of passion from him - indeed, hardly anything at all that acknowledges their time together save for something brusque, perhaps an inquiry as to how she's feeling before he takes off.

Despite the distance that he strives to maintain with most others, to you, Taira, he's someone who simply has a hard time of explaining how and why he cares. In your case, sometimes these things aren't important - sometimes, it's enough that he does, that you're together, that he'll be there by your side throughout your adventures and to watch and help you grow as brilliantly as he'll work his way through everything else - your partner in crime.

Perpetual motion. That's one way to sum up Bhezuth's mind in a nutshell. Illuminated circles constantly spin and twirl, speed increasing with agitation or excitement. Bright colors from all ends of the spectrum find a presence here, colors varying and shifting as constantly as one thought sparks into the next. He's fond of utilizing the smallest details to convey his meanings - a touch of scent here, a flash of something there. The sound of a scrape, a shuffle, or a click - anything that will emphasize what he feels is important. Smoke sometimes occludes the colors of his mindscape when he's particularly thoughtful or trying to puzzle through something, while delight, anger and sadness are all keenly felt in flashes of various colors on black.

Sherlock Holmes is a famous fictional detective of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish-born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of "deductive reasoning" while using abductive reasoning (inference to the best explanation) and astute observation to solve difficult cases." - Wikipedia

In keeping with our dragon theme of epic / memorable characters, Bhezuth was completely inspired by Sherlock Holmes, that brilliant detective who has been featured in four novels and fifty-six short stories. For more information, the Wikipedia article is located at:

This cycle, the eggs were based off of the Olympics to celebrate the twenty-ninth Olympiad. Dance of the Fans Egg is one of the eggs that drew inspiration from a former Olympic site - in this case, the games held in Seoul, Korea in 1988. The description is mainly based on an image of the traditional dancers from the closing ceremony for the games (located on

Bhezuth's hatchling name was intended to be a play on 'A Study in Scarlet, ' and his actual name is a combination of letters from 'Bohemian' and 'deduza.' The latter is Portuguese for "deduce, " a word that is central to both Holmes' and Bhezuth's thought processes. It was really difficult finding one that fit your preferences, but I hope that you like it. The quotes in his personality are drawn from _A Scandal in Bohemia_.

It's been a real pleasure having you here with us during candidacy, Taira, and we're all really excited to see what you do during weyrlinghood and beyond. Congratulations, Taira - we're so glad to have you here with us!
