Gothic Guardian Bronze Odryth

Dark bronze spills over this seemingly cracked dragon's hide, shrouding him in the deepest darkness known to his kind. Oxidized green fills in the cracks of his hide, forming most heavily around joints and giving him an ancient feel. His blocky head holds a pair of slick downward sloping headknobs along with a large and square jaw. A muscular neck connects to his broad chest and shoulders which seem capable of bearing all of Pern's weight if necessary. His wings are standard in size and shape, though the weathered greenish-blue has solidified all along his spars, outlining his drab bronzen sails. His delicate legs are not frail but dwarfed by the rest of him and ending in razor sharp talons dipped in light bronze. A violent change in structure occurs at his waist, which tapers in, lengthening the dragon's appearance. His tail is raised up higher than most dragons either by choice or design and ends in a knife-like spade smothered in copper.


Egg Name and Description

Hope for the Future Egg
The base of this egg looks like a blue platform. Towering over it are six tall figures in either red, blue or yellow. They circle the egg, each captured in a different pose, caught in their eternal dance around the Hatchling within. A line of dots starts at the midsection, the 'crowd' fading as it moves higher. Finally it ceases all and white takes over. On this field of white are three lines decreasing in size as they move towards the apex. First a thick orange-red line, starting off thin on the left and growing in width as well as curving downwards. Over it a thinner line in mustard follows the form of an upwards facing crescent. Finally nestled safely in the hold of the yellow band is a short fat line in a shade of cornflower blue.


Hatching Message

Hope for the Future Egg trembles a bit before another claw tip is pushed through the shell on the opposite side of the first, the original one sticking through the other hole as well. It gives a wobble from side to side, and when the count reaches three the hatchling pushes against both sides and finally breaks free, spilling out onto the sands.


Impression Message

The faint sound of footsteps enters your mind, growing louder by the second. Suddenly a blackness consumes the sands, leaving you completely alone. Finally the footsteps cease and a warm voice breaks the darkness, the bellowing of a trumpet breaking forth. « You look a bit of a mess, Ly'am. We should fix that. » It says in a quirky sort of way, amusement easily detected behind it. « Come now, I'm Odryth and the day is not getting any younger. I'm in need of some nourishment so let us be on our way! »


Personality

Bruce Wayne: Should I just bury the past out there with my parents, Alfred?
Alfred Pennyworth: I wouldn't presume to tell you what to do with your past, sir. Just know that there are those of us who care about what you do with your future.
Bruce Wayne: Haven't given up on me yet?
Alfred Pennyworth: Never.

Odryth has achieved something extremely difficult: feeling like you are his child while not treating you like one. Just because he's not cooing over you constantly doesn't mean he won't be supplying you with good advice when he feels you need it. As soon as you walk off the sands with him it will become very clear that /he/ knows what's best. Don't be shocked to find him less than willing to comply with you when you try to tell him how to chew his food properly. He'll more than likely give you a good stare before saying something along the lines of: « Come now Ly'am, what do you take me for a child? » His words won't cut you down, if anything they'll probably get a laugh out of you, but they do remind you that he feels he knows a great deal more than you give him credit for.

Alfred Pennyworth: What was the point of all those push-ups if you can't even lift a bloody log?

During lessons you'll find Odryth to be more responsive to the Weyrlingmasters than to you. Even then, he'll be one to learn from examples rather than instructions. Once he sees it done he will be able to mimic pretty easily. Odryth will also be quick to push you harder during those early morning drills you'll come to hate, knowing full well what you are capable of even when you may not be so certain yourself. Lucky for you he always uses his witty humor to help you along the way, reserving a serious tone for only the most extreme circumstances. He'll keep you going when all those lessons and training start to bring you down, always ready to keep your spirits up by uttering a dry comment about one of the other weyrling pairs. « It's a bloody miracle that Reiko hasn't collapsed yet… someone needs to learn to harness that girls energy and put it to better use. » He'll know just what to say and when to say it in order to bring out the best of you!

Bruce Wayne: We need to send these people away now.
Alfred Pennyworth: Those are Bruce Wayne's guests out there, sir. You have a name to maintain.
Bruce Wayne: I don't care about my name.
Alfred Pennyworth: It's not just your name, sir! It's your father's name! And it's all that's left of him. Don't destroy it.

Odryth is always watching out for you and naturally he's going to try his best to keep you out of trouble. When you come up with a scheme to cause a bit of mayhem he won't hesitate in pointing out why you shouldn't follow through with your plans. He'll use common sense and that dry wit of his to try to steer you in another direction, /away/ from those extra laps. However, if you should decide to follow through with it, you can count him in. He's not one to sell you out or leave you on your own so why would he abandon you when you need him the most? Yes, he'll follow you, but only so that he can keep an eye on you and make sure you don't get caught. After all, your wellbeing is what is most important to him.

There's more to this bronze than just being your keeper, he's got a fun side too. He's obsessed over golfing; or well, his own version of it. He'll play by using his tail to knock anything circular around, aiming for nothing in general at first but eventually making little holes for them to fall into. As he grows older he'll get better and it'll be an almost daily morning and evening ritual for him to play. His love for this game will almost guarantee you'll get a nice low level weyr facing away from as much as possible. Why? Well it's pretty much guaranteed Odryth will use the ledge as his own personal driving range, of course! When it is time for you two to move into your own weyr be certain that he'll go to great lengths to keep it nice and tidy. He'll be quick to grab up any of your clothes he finds on the floor and never say anything of it, after all he is there to look after you. When you've had a rough night he'll let you sleep in but when you do wake up, either of your own free will or because he decided you'd been out for long enough, he'll be ready to remind you of all the things you have to take care of that day.

Bruce Wayne: People are dying, Alfred. What would you have me do?
Alfred Pennyworth: Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They'll hate you for it, but that's the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice.
Bruce Wayne: Well today I found out what Batman can't do. He can't endure this. Today you get to say "I told you so."
Alfred Pennyworth: Today, I don't want to.
(pauses for several moments)
Alfred Pennyworth: But I did bloody tell you.

As he grows older his reluctance to listen to you will gradually start to fade. When you've graduated from weyrlinghood he'll be ready to follow your lead, taking the backseat but still keeping an eye out for you. Now that you're ready to lead he'll expect more from you and he'll let you know it. Honor and duty will be the ideals this bronze pushes when you finally join a wing. This is one of the few things Odryth won't be willing to compromise on because he knows you're not meant for the coward's way out. He knows you can endure the burden of following the path of honesty and responsibility which he knows you are meant for. He's certain about this because he knows you'll always have him to help you along the way therefore success is certain!

When it comes to flights Odryth will be a bit peculiar. He won't make any real comments about the glowing hides of the greens or golds around him, choosing to just watch and wait until they actually rise to get involved. When it does come time to chase rest assured that he'll see it as a thrill, his love for flying shining through easily. Since he's not a huge bronze he'll actually dabble in a few acrobatics, nothing spectacular but just a twist or turn here and there to enhance the excitement. As the flight moves towards its final stage expect him to grow more aggressive, snapping at the other males with disdain. She is /his/ prize after all. And a strike with his tail spade to any that forget who's top dog will serve as an excellent remainder. If he fails he'll be rather nonchalant about it, taking his loss in stride. Even though he doesn't vocalize his disappointment, it'll be rather obvious when he immediately takes a trip to the pens to take his frustration out on the livestock, killing more than his share. If he wins, however, he'll be a bit smug about it for a few days. His walk will have a bit of a skip to it and he'll hold that blocky head of his up high. If the catch results in a clutching he'll be a rather attentive father. He will constantly be watching over the eggs like a silent guardian while tending to the gold's needs as best he can, be it through providing conversation or a way for her to vent.

So why did he pick you? Well out of all the candidates on the sands Odryth was drawn to you for a very simple reason: your youth. He felt you needed a father to watch over you and help you grow into the right kind of man. Being a great listener, a dispenser of amazing advice and capable of changing roles from friend to father, it was obvious you were meant for him. Together you are the perfect team, the rational and the emotional.

Mindvoice

Odryth's mind touch will feel very familiar and warm, as if an old friend were placing his hand on your shoulder. The sound of flamenco will resound in the background when he's in a good mood, the music making a wonderfully soothing ambiance as he speaks. A deep black will flow into your mind, consuming you completely but in a comforting way, as if it were a protective sheet. When angered, however, Odryth will streak a vivid scarlet across the darkness. The tempo will increase and the stomping will move from a soothing accompaniment to a harsh clatter, beautiful yet terrifying. Odryth will rely mostly on music to communicate with you, choosing just the right instrument to convey his emotion. The rustic twang of the guitar when pensive, the sad song of the flute when lonely, or the brassy trumpet when thrilled.


Inspiration

Since our Search cycle started around the time the Olympics did we decided to go ahead and have our eggs represent Olympic host cities. The egg that housed Odryth represents Barcelona which hosted the games in the summer of 1992. The egg itself was fashioned after the emblem for those games (http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/past/index_uk.asp?OLGT=1&OLGY=1992 take a look on the right hand side ^^)

Since I was using Spain for the egg I decided to use a cultural symbol for the country for the mindvoice, that's where flamenco comes into play. The sound of the feet stomping along with the music and even the scarlet and black colors your bronze uses were all taken from this amazing dance (I used this video to gain inspiration for writing his mind voice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPhCIKFkfg4 ^^).

Our hatchling theme was memorable people and when I read over your application I thought that Alfred Pennyworth from Batman would be a perfect fit! Now when it comes to Odryth's appearance I decided to make him look more like Gotham city which has that dark and ancient look to it, along with a few hints of Batman. I had to switch the mindvoice around a bit because I can't imagine Alfred dancing to flamenco, but I tried to not change it too much. So I decided to make it feel more like you were in a dark corner of Wayne Manor with the music as a backdrop. By the way, I based him most heavily on Alfred as portrayed by Michael Cain from the more recent movies. If you're wondering how I came up with the name, I basically just scrambled up Alfred Pennyworth until I came up with something I thought sounded nice ^^ I hope you enjoy your dragon and please remember that you don't have to play him exactly as he is written. Odryth is yours now and the most important thing is that you enjoy him. :)
