How to Scare a Holdbred Boy

Western Weyr - Recreation Cavern
This large cavern is painted a pleasant shade of pale blue-green, with purple highlights along borders. Western Weyr's badge is featured in a twin tapestries hanging on either side of the entry. Directly inside the doors and to the right is an area with bookshelves and a long computer desk for the public computer. Several chairs line the desk so that people waiting for the computer may pursue other studies. To the left of the entrance is a sitting area with a chess set built into a table.
Along the wall to the left is a bar, set up against the storage closet. Tall metal chairs with bright purple and blue-green cushions line the bar; beside the bar is a pair of gambling machines. Prior to recent renovations, the bar was set up on the other side of the room in front of a huge mirror inset into the wall. Now that mirror is behind a slightly elevated stage featuring a piano recently built by the Harper Hall and transported to the islands. Several music stands and musician's chairs are stacked against the wall, for use when Harpers or weyrfolk desire to perform.
Along the wall opposite the entrance are dart boards, each with a set of couches and chairs nearby for relaxation between turns. And all throughout the room are sitting areas with similarly constructed couches and chairs, all featuring blue-green or purple fabric. Short, darkly stained wooden tables are centered inside each sitting area, for games, food, drinks, and whatever else weyrfolk need. Near the center of the room is a large, long table useable both for crafty pursuits or table tennis, and interspersed throughout the room are card tables with wooden, cushioned chairs.

The rec cavern is a good place for weyr sanctioned debauchery. Gambling, drinking, and other such things. They do let candidates in past the door though. Generally Zi'on tends to partake in these activities outside of town, in the Lodge close to the Marketplace. But today he's dragging Xander along, and the bronzer isn't sure he'll be coherent enough at the end of the night to escort anyone back home. So instead he's off to the rec cavern. He's set word to Kaliena as well, that she ought to come along if she can tear herself away from work and chores. The place is bustling tonight, there's a harper at the piano who is playing songs and encouraging everyone to sing along. Zi'on heads straight to the bar on entry to get himself a drink. "Whiskey," he tells the bartender. "And whatever my friend wants, as long as there's no alcohol."

Xander cannot help but raise an amused eyebrow at Zi'on as he stipulates that 'no alcohol' rule. "You don't have to worry about that, sir. I haven't really developed a taste for the stuff /outside/ of candidacy. Let alone when I'm explicitly not allowed to have it." Sea green eyes crinkle in amusement as he leans forward to order some juice from the bartender once he's returned with Zi'on's more adult beverage. "So what's your game?" he asks of the bronzerider, once his own glass is set in front of him (a very manly pink shade) and he reaches forward to claim it. "I used to be pretty good at darts back at the Hold, but I've been slacking. Looks like those riders would quickly have me beat," he tells the other man, gesturing with a nod of his head towards the rowdy group of riders gathered around the board. "Could go for a game of cards or something."

Kaliena does arrive after some time, having received Zi'on's invitation but unable to rush over immediately (despite wanting too, most likely). Half her time had been in the kitchens already for the day and the smithcrafter only just managed to escape to her mentor's forge to catch up on her studies. When she does slip in through the doors, it's obvious she stopped to clean up at least too. Wearing a short-sleeved tunic that is a touch baggy on her flat frame, it's left untucked over a pair of slim fitting pants and for once her clothing is free of any dust or dirt. On her feet she's wearing sandals and her still damp hair is left unbound and drifting in a mess of wavy curls over her shoulders. Though it's been some time since the incident with the spiderclaws, the candidate is still carrying her makeshift bludgeon-like stick around, tucked away at her side but within reach. It's not hard to spot Zi'on or Kaliena simply knows where to look and without hesitating, she approaches. Xander is given a curious, slightly uncertain look but overall her mood towards him seems friendly enough and then she's slipping into a seat next to the Weyrleader and likely sandwiching him between two candidates. "We even allowed to gamble or is it just a casual game of cards?" she drawls as she catches the last of Xander's conversation.

There's something strange about the weyrleader. Mostly that he's shaved off his beard. He's still fairly stubbly, with his five o'clock shadow coming in around noon most of the time. Zi'on peers at Xander when he says he doesn't like alcohol. "Are you sure you weren't just drinking… I dunno, cheap crap? Maybe we should get you started on some virgin drinks, then later when you can graduate you up to the real things." Zi'on wrinkles his nose at the notion of darts. "I'm not too good at them. I prefer dragon poker." The weyrleader isn't hard to spot, being so tall with a fancy knot. Not that he's wearing fancy clothes, it was much too hot for that. He sips at his drink once it's delivered, and goes to sit down at a free table to get a card game started. There's a grin to Kaliena when she heads over. "Hey there. Where's my kiss?" He rubs his chin then. There's no beard to tug. "We can gamble… but not for marks. Let's make it interesting."

"Well, in the Guard corp, we weren't supposed to be drinking," Xander supplies as his true reason for not being an alcohol loving weyr denizen like the rest of Pern. "I just never started really drinking the stuff. Tell you what," and with that, he tilts his head to the side, and offers Kaliena a polite smile. "When this is all said and done, you're /more/ than welcome to school me in drinking." This is followed by a swig of his pink juice. Nice. Xander doesn't look terribly shabby today, since it's likely he's been trailing the Weyrleader for a little while now. His own beard is still present, however, even if Zi'on's is not. When the bronzerider suggests gambling, the former Guard quirks an eybrow. "Then for what?"

"Careful. You may regret asking him that." Kaliena drawls with a bit of a lopsided smirk towards Xander regarding the wish to be schooled in the art of drinking. She's likely noticed the change with Zi'on having shaved and true to her nature, points it out. "So what spurred you into shavin' this time?" she asks and then snorts, settling comfortably into her seat and crossing her arms over her chest. "Didn't think I had to greet you like that every day." Kaliena mumbles before tilting her head, a curious glance darting between Weyrleader and fellow candidate alike. "Interesting, huh?" she says slowly, chin tilting up as if to accept some sort of challenge. "Oh, there's plenty one can gamble aside from marks. Doubtful any of 'em are really proper. So we may be out of luck that route too."

"Ah right. The guard thing. I guess while you're in training you're not supposed to, but I see plenty of the guards here and at the Lounge and the Lodge. So you'll need to me well versed eventually." Zi'on laughs a bit. "I don't know if I can school you, unless you're curious as to how to distill your own liquor. I can show you that." The bronzer pouts at Kaliena as she refuses to kiss him hello. "Yes you do have to greet me like that everyday. It's bad enough you're a candidate. Now I don't even get a kiss hello?" Actually Kaliena has -never- kissed Zi'on hello. He can't even remember the last time she initiated a kiss, even. About the beard his only explanation is, "I was hot." So apparently he shaved it. "Let's make it strip poker. You can get a pass on strip though if you answer a question posed by the winner of the round." Zi'on takes a sip of his drink, then picks up the cards to shuffle them. "Once you're down to your undies, you're out."

Xander blinks. And again. "Uh.." is the only syllable he utters for a second, using the excuse of juice drinking to give him a few additional moments of respite before he raises two hands in surrender. "Uh, I think I'll pass. Politely," he tells both Zi'on and Kaliena, glancing between the two of them in rapid fire motion. (Is that a little red tinge to his face?) Clearing his throat, he sets the empty glass back on the bar, and nods to the Weyrleader. "I'd best get back to chores anyway. So if you'll excuse me." He raises a hand in salute, before offering a polite nod to Kaliena as well. And the kid /high/ /tails/ it out of there. Something someone said?

No, she hasn't ever initiated a greeting kiss and Kaliena doesn't seem bound to start here in the recreation cavern in front of other riders, weyfolk and another candidate. Maybe he'll luck out some other time. She only shrugs to his reason for shaving, likely agreeing with it to judge from the vague smile she gives. It quickly shifts to another smirk and the girl almost rolls her eyes. "Uh huh. Knew you'd suggest stripping. Shells, you're predictable, Zi'on." She drawls but it's meant to be teasing from her tone. Then she's eyeing Xander as the guard surrenders and then all but flees the table. His farewell nod is returned briskly, but she says nothing in regards to his abrupt departure until he's well and gone. Kaliena sighs in a mocking way, "All guards so uptight?" she remarks dryly and with another snort. "Looks like it's just a game 'tween you and I. Not much of a game though. Might have to choose another."

Zi'on blinks at Xander. "Eh? Why?" Of course the ex-guard doesn't exactly answer the bronzer, instead choosing to run out on them. Zi'on sighs a bit. "Holdbred boys." Zi'on can only keep holding his breath for a kiss from Kaliena. He can always trick her into wanting one if he's really that desperate. He grins to Kaliena. "What? I can't help it. I'm not getting laid. I have to take what I can get at this point." He leans over to poke at her nose, then shrugs about Xander. "I dunno. Maybe he ain't never been mostly nekid in front of a girl as cute as you. Maybe he's embarrassed since I'm so buff and handsome." He teases. "Hm, another game? Like what?"

"Holdbred boys what?" Kaliena remarks with a pointed look to Zi'on, but from her crooked grin, maybe she's just teasing the Weyrleader again. Maybe. Now she really does roll her eyes and gives an exasperated sigh. "Poor you. How ever will you survive?" she drawls mockingly, tilting her head just-so and regarding the bronzerider with a lingering look. Then he's poking her nose again and just like before she smacks at his hand and grimaces. "Quit it!" The candidate growls, rubbing at her face with the back of her hand before chuckling dryly and drawling, "Ah. Green guard and a green boy? Poor fellow then." She flushes a little, "And I doubt it was cause I'm "cute". I'm likely to frighten 'im off girls for good if I'd be the first he ever sees. More boy then girl, remember?" And she uncrosses her arms long enough to point her hands up at her (lack of) chest with a smirk. "Or maybe he's intimidated by you. Dunno." Kaliena shrugs then, playing along with the teasing before giving a dismissive wave of her hand. "I dunno. You're the mastermind for these things!"

"Holdbred boys are wherries about some things. They'll pick a fight with the biggest guy around, but are embarrassed to take their pants off in the baths." Zi'on peers at Kaliena and that crooked grin of hers. "Well, for starters I could find a new girl. That would solve a lot of my issues I think." He grins back at her. Two can play at that game, missy! "Heh. Maybe you should give him some pointers. Now that you're well-versed." He peers at Kaliena. "How would you frighten him off? I've seen your sets of bits, and they aren't no boy-bits." He pokes at where one of her lady lumps should be. "They'd be more visible if you wore a tighter shirt. But they're there. I've seen them. And also they don't have much to do with you being cute, anyways." Zi'on his more of a behind sort of guy, anyways. "Me!? Oh, I almost forgot. Here." He reaches into his pocket to hand her a letter. It says "to Ila'den" on the front in girlie handwriting. "If you're still game. We should think up a big prank for the candidates."

Kaliena laughs - actually laughs! - for Zi'on's reply on holdbred boys and her grin turns genuine. "You've got a lick of truth with that for once. Some holdbred boys are wherries." She peers right back at the bronzerider and then scoffs, brows arching upwards. "Liar. 'Less it's a flight I don't see you taking another girl to bed. And even if you did, I don't think I'd really care." She drawls, smirking again. Which is a lie of course, she'd likely be jealous and a little hurt. When he pokes her, she hisses some curse or another at him and knocks his hand away. "Ow! Shard it, what's with the poking?" The candidate growls and then promptly crosses her arms to avoid a repeat. "I was just jokin' around anyhow." Kaliena grumbles, eyeing Zi'on for a moment before glancing at the letters he pulls out. Freeing one hand, she snatches it quickly from his grip, flipping it from side to side and then snorting in amusement. "Huh. So you actually went through with it. Yeah, I'm game. When's the best time to plant it in his office then?" she asks casually, as if they were just simply discussing the weather. The letter is tucked away safely into one of her pockets. "Don't think we got enough excitement from the spiderclaws, do you?"

Zi'on chuckles a bit at Kaliena's confirmation. "Oh? Something that you've dealt with before, I take it? While you were trying to woo some holdbred sot into your bed?" He gives her a suspicious look at her next comment. Can't tell if kidding, or really would care. "You don't think I would, eh?" He won't. Despite all his claims about sex, Zi'on gets along just fine without it. It's only when Kaliena's around that he thinks about it constantly. Zi'on lays his arm on the back of Kaliena's chair, hopefully then making it hard to poke her front. "Yep. At night, probably. Anytime past dinner. He generally eats in the caverns or with Iris, then goes straight home, so. Or catch him out during lunch or something." Zi'on raises a brow at her. "Eh? The spiderclaws weren't a prank. They're all over the weyr. Migration patterns or something, the beastcrafters say. I had some in my weyr. Had to get the firelizards to root them out."

Kaliena only gives Zi'on a long and rather disbelieving look before huffing with feigned injured pride. "Me? Woo a right and proper holdbred lad to my bed? Of course not!" And then she snorts, her gaze narrowing. "I was taking a shot at my brothers, silly. Ilenki is not only a wherry, but also a spineless bastard. Th'ero could at least hold up on his own in a fight, but he's an ass and stubborn, him and his pride." At his suspicious look, Kaliena only does her best to look innocent and "cute" maybe but whether or not it works depends on Zi'on really. "Nope. Don't think you would." She turns thoughtful next, when the Weyrleader gives her the details on the Weyrsecond's daily patterns and a slow grin curves up along her lips. "He makes it too easy. I can probably have the letters set then by tomorrow. Or tonight even. Is there a rush with this?" Kaliena grimaces next, eyeing Zi'on with a look that seems to say: do you think I'm stupid? "I know they weren't a prank. Familiar enough with spiderclaws to clue in what was happenin' once the lights were on and the shrieking stopped. Figure they're done their little invasion then? Or are they still trying to sort it all out?"

Zi'on laughs. "Oh I see. You only want us improper weyrbred boys in your bed, hm? Can't say I blame you. A holder lad would probably just bumble around not knowing what to put where." He laughs about her brothers. "That's not very nice." That 'cute' look just garners more suspicion from the bronzer. "Letter/s/? You're going to set them all at once? I thought we'd put one on his desk over the course of a sevenday or so. There's no real rush, no. Unless you think you can hide them in spots where he's sure to find them." Zi'on eyes Kaliena back. "Heh, screaming? Anyways, I hope so. We think maybe the change in fishing patterns helped to bolster the juvenile populations, too. Not enough predators in the area they cross over in. So instead of maybe a hundred landing on the beach there was thousands. Then they picked the beach dry pretty quick and kept moving inland and got disoriented. I dunno. We'll be having spiderclaw soup and spiderclaw cakes and spiderclaw everything for a while. Suldith even ate a whole bucket full. Just crunched 'em right in his teeth. The rest we dumped back out into the water or onto some of the surrounding island."

Kaliena laughs again, though this time not as carefree as before. This one is a little rough around the edges and the girl only shrugs in answer. She smirks, giving Zi'on a look for his "scolding" on her attitude towards her brother. "Not meant to be /nice/." She replies sarcastically and then blinks. "Well no. Not all at once. And I don't know him well enough to be crafty enough to hide 'em. So a letter planted by day over a sevenday will work." And she pats the pocket where she tucked the letters away to assure the Weyrleader that she's completely devoted to the task. "Yeah, shrieking. Some of the girls and one guy I think. Useless. You'd think they'd never seen a spiderclaw in their lives." Most probably hadn't! But that doesn't seem to matter to Kaliena. The candidate nods her head to Zi'on's explanation and then wrinkles her nose, grimacing and making a disgusted noise in her throat. "Oh, that's just /great/. Guess its veggies and fruit for me then. Was never fond of 'claw and ain't about to start now." Speaking of food, she turns her head towards the living caverns and then side-glances back to Zi'on. "Hungry? I skipped dinner in order to get here. Hopefully there's more then just spiderclaw though."

Zi'on laughs. "You should be nicer to Th'ero. What if he died tomorrow? Then you'd feel bad you never made up with him." He nods then about the letters. "Sounds good. Maybe we'll slip one into his weyr." Zi'on doesn't need to be reassured about Kaliena's devotion. He can already tell she's enjoying this. He laughs. "Or maybe just not that many? I dunno, some people are scared of them, too. Heh, well we did ship a whole bunch out to other weyrs and holds, too. So maybe you'll be alright. Personally I don't care for them that much either unless they're in a bisque." There's a shrug about being hungry. "I could get a pastry. You shouldn't have skipped dinner." He gets up then and heads out with her, probably stopping in a dark corner someplace for a quick snog.
