Variable Plans

Western Weyr - Living Caverns

Here is the center of Weyr life, the living caverns. These two main rooms were man-shaped from smaller caves, and are joined by a carved arch with depictions of dragons in flight and dolphins leaping in swirling waves. One room has many round stone and wooden tables and a stone fire-pit instead of a hearth. Over the round-walled, gas fired pit is a large conical hood made of polished bronze, with reliefs of dragons with their riders flying over ships guided by dolphins. This hood and chimney keeps the room smoke-free. Through the archway is an enormous hall, with long tables and benches, some carved from the rock floor, many crafted of wood. This room is a combination dining and meeting hall, and can seat over 300 comfortably. Above both rooms, angled shafts lined with polished metal bring in sunlight during the day. Electric lights also burn, day and night.

The living caverns are relatively busy at this time of the day, but there is one part where it isn't too busy. Computer crafters sit across from one another, both on their respective laptops and talking silently when called for. But it is mainly computer things that they talk about. After a moment, Kiley looks up from her laptop and smiles at him. "Did you need help with anything? I've input most of my stuff already." Entirely distracted by watching him, she doesn't return right to her laptop when finished speaking, her gaze lingering.

Nikolas type, type, types away there across from Kiley, one of his feet on the floor wedged between hers. He looks up at her question, distracted, and then shakes his head. "Hmm, no, nearly done." he mutters, and goes on, pausing with only one hand as to push his glasses back up the line of his nose. He does actually wrap it up, the laptop ejecting a disk. The disk is put into a protective sleeve, and then put into the laptop satchel that the man carries around with him. Vera, yes his laptop has a name, is closed and left where she is for now even as her lover leans back in his chair and plucks up the glass of juice he'd brought with him to the table.

Kiley hms, but leaves it at that, typing a few more things and then closing her laptop so that she may watch him more easily. Her elbow comes to rest on the table, chin being propped up by her hand and she watches him, still. Hazel eyes close partially at least until Vera is closed and then she sits up straighter, taking her own bit of juice and sipping thoughtfully. "My friend would like to meet you at some point, Nik. She is a dolphineer. Did you know that they learn how to speak how dolphin's do? They have their own language." The computer crafter is entirely bright as she says this, thoughtful.

Nikolas takes a sip of his beverage before setting the glass back down upon the tabletop. "Oh?" he says, at mention of Kiley's friend, brows lifting upwards. If he is at all freaked out by the woman's near constant need to stare or gaze at him longingly with those dreamy sighs of hers, he certainly doesn't show it. In fact, it doesn't appear to bother him at all. Completely unphased. "I'm sure I could work that into my schedule, any particular time or day?" he ask, scooting forward and opening Vera again, waiting for her to boot up before typing away and likely pulling up his itinerary. At the rest, he looks at her over his laptop with those warm brown eyes of his, "Is that so. Interesting." he murmurs, before his gaze returns to the computer screen.

Kiley nods, smiling still as she watches him. If she's noticing that she's staring or releasing more dreamy sighs, she doesn't show much of it. Fingers tap along her cheek and then hums, "no. Working around your schedule would be easier, give me the free times and then I will speak with her and see when we can and then I'll inform you in which time would be the best." When he looks to her, she smiles warmly and chuckles softly. "Dolphins can speak like us as well." She informs, head tilting just a bit. "Have you been to Landing, Nik?"

What little typing there was slows and eventually stops as Nikolas discovers that there really isn't anything to be putting in there at the moment, lips twitching downwards to a degree. Once more his eyes lift from the computer monitor, and the man nods once. "All right." he says simply, a flick of attention to the screen again triggering what looks like him remembering something he had forgotten, ad more typing commences. "I can't say I've ever had the notion to speak to seafaring mammals, to be honest." A glance to Kiley with a pause in the typing to push his glasses back up again. "Did you just say that Dolphins can talk like us? I don't believe I have ever heard that before." he says with a somewhat dubious tone, though it fades as the woman brings up Landing. There is a bob of his head for her question. "I have. Though it has been a few turns."

Kiley notes the downward quirk of his lip with a slight frown, she notices little details like that from paying full attention to him. "If that doesn't work for you, we can do something different." She insists. Though she nods her agreement until he's pausing and considering her. She chuckles softly, lips curling into a wide smile. "Yes. I met one, actually." She pushes up from her seat and settles in beside him, her hand resting gingerly upon his arm. "You could meet one as well, Jey may be happy to oblige?" She questions him and then chuckles softly, "we could go sometime."

Nikolas ceases typing as Kiley suggests perhaps doing something else, letting out a soft sigh. "That isn't what I meant Kiley." he says, closing the laptop and pushing his chair out just a little. It's then that he waves her over and pats his lap, apparently having made a place for her there. Then the dolphins are brought up again and the man can't help but chuckle. "I can see how excited you are about it, and if it'll make you happy then yes, I suppose we could go sometime." He shakes his head though, a second before he removes his glasses and adjusts the nose rests before sliding them back up the slope of his nose.

"You seemed a little frustrated about me not knowing a time at this moment." Cheeks color when he pats his lap and she moves instantly to settle there, an arm slipping around his neck. She looks utterly pleased, especially once her agrees about seeing the dolphins. "It is amazing, Nik. It was surprising when I heard him start talking. I'll ask Jey soon." She promises, gingerly patting his chest with her small hand. "You will not be disappointed." Another promise and she tilts back to look at him. "What more do you have to work on this evening? Perhaps we can see if she is in the lagoon later."

Nikolas hmm's and shrugs his shoulders lightly, "I like to stay on schedule, so having unknown variables tends to throw me off balance." He doesn't appear at least to be making excuses for himself, rather just sticking to the facts. He does chuckle again, stroking a hand through Kiley's long hair, admiring it's softness for more than a few moments. "I'm sure it'll be everything you say it will." he says coiling an arm around her waist, and lifting his gaze to meet hers. "I have some code left to write, but it's not due back at the hall until next week. I really wish they allowed ran advancement to Master before thirty, the tasks they keep assigning me are so simple." he sighs. He wasn't tooting his own horn.

Kiley considers and then nods her understanding. "Unknown variables can be planned around, this is something that I learned to do as a candidate. I was unable to determine what I would be doing should I Impress, but could plan for the possibility of doing so or not." There's no anger or dismay for his reasoning, understanding. Cheeks color as he strokes a hand through her hair, shivering just a bit. A soft chuckle slips from her lips, "yes. I am eager to see your reaction. It would be best for Vera to be left in my room, dolphins splash." She reminds softly, settling easily into the arm as it wraps around her. "Hn. Coding is so simple, though. I'm certain you can finish it before then. Perhaps you could speak with the CraftMaster about possibly allowing you to work towards being Master soon. I've heard of it in some crafts, it is possible."

Nikolas shakes his head just vaguely, "Being unknown, makes them variable. There is no planning around them. For example, if I was to plan a day of coding, lunch with my girlfriend, followed by more coding and then a late dinner back at the craft all and something came up that wasn't planned for it would throw the rest of it off. In fact depending on when this unknown variable came up, the entire schedule would have to either rewritten or might conflict with the rest of the week." His eyes widen at this, because, you see, the horror. The absolute horror. Then there is the case of Vera, and at the very thought of dolphin splashing causing his beloved harm, the man go completely tense all at once. "Yes, that would be a very wise decision." Vera would be nice and comfy on Kiley's bed, and far far away from splashy dolphins. He does arch a brow though, at mention of obtaining the level of Master sooner rather then in decade.

Kiley chuckles again, her fingers playing lightly with the shirt beneath her fingers. "It would, that is correct. But for the days where nothing is entirely planned, yet, the variable will not bother too much. Now, let us say that you have tomorrow free and you plan on having breakfast, and then returning to the Weyr for lunch with me and the rest of your evening is free, wouldn't you enjoy having that variable present so that you may fill the rest of your day? I would never ask you to break your planned days for something that isn't entirely calculated yet." She insists. The horror on his face draws out the faintest of laughter before she nods her agreement. "I would never want anything to happen to her." Her poor boyfriend would be crushed. "Would you like me to try and speak with the CraftMaster about it?"

Glancing down at where Kiley's fingers toy with the light fabric of his shirt. "My days are always planned down to the last minute. It's how I get everything done that needs doing." he murmurs, sounding distracted again. But this time it wasn't because there was a keyboard in front of him, there was suddenly in his life a whole new reason for his lack of focus in life. The hand that isn't coiled around the woman' wait lifts, brushing across her cheek. A nod for Vera's safety, and then a bit of furrowed brows for the part about the craft. "I'm perfectly able to speak to them myself, though I don't think it will be met favorably. I've only been a journeyman for a few turns." A sigh for this as his hand falls away from her face to his lap. "People expect age and wisdom with age, not a twenty turn old Master computer crafter with an obsessive compulsive disorder."

Kiley chuckles softly, "then, I will find a day where she is free and we'll plan properly." She is very intent to making sure that he is comfortable. Fingers continue to play with the fabric of his shirt, thoughtful of the fabric before her gaze lifts to settle upon his. Cheeks color a little more and she smiles happily. "I know you are. I have no doubt in this, but, if you wish to reach promotion faster than thirty Turns, Nik, there is perhaps a way that you can work this out. They have promoted journeymen at younger." She taps his nose with a finger, stern in this. "You can work something out. Maybe you will be working more, you know the craft. You have great knowledge, you are certainly master material. You must work towards something you want to do."

Nikolas actually seemed relieved when Kiley mentions actually making set plans rather then flying by the seat of their pants, the tension that had earlier afflicted him, melting almost completely in a matter of seconds. "I suppose it's presumptuous of me to assume that they would just hand me a master's knot at twenty." he breaths, "Simply because I'm a genius." He's utterly serious when he says this, and there isn't any indication that there is any ego involved. He was, again, stating fact. The tap to his nose snaps him out of his own thoughts and he flicks warm brown eyes in her direction, rather than staring off into space. There is a nod, "I've been working towards it since I was eleven, I suppose impatience is one of those impetuous afflictions of youth that I will have to overcome if I expect the Masters to take me seriously."

Kiley notes the change with her smile growing wider upon her lips, her arm slipping from around his neck with her hands settling upon her lap. "It is." She won't lie, "but, you work harder than many I've seen in our craft, you are constantly working. You are a genius." She is quick to agree with all these facts, but she has been observing him almost non-stop. Her eyes focus upon his and she smiles, brushing a gentle kiss to his cheek before moving to settle in the chair beside him. "Patience is always important, Nik. Perhaps they simply want you to grow in patience and understanding." Her hand settles over his and then she's pushing up from the chair. "Time is up, it appears. I should return to my work, I've more papers to input if I want to get this done early. I will see you tomorrow?"

Nikolas tilts his head to one side as Kiley speaks, idly watching as her arm is extracted and her hands move to her lap, gaze drifting back up to her face a few moments later. His eyes do widen though as she puts a kiss to his cheek, distracted by that enough that he seems to barely notice her extracting herself from his lap, to the point that he almost seems surprised to find it empty. The man nods his head simply when her hand slips over his and she bestows upon him her wisdom, brows knitting when she's suddenly leaving. His mouth opens, closes and then he nods again. "I have lunch scheduled with you all this week." A pause, and his lips twist down at the corners into the smallest fraction of a frown. His eyes to hers, "I hope that was permissible?" he asks, after th fact of course.

Maybe some part of her takes pleasure in shocking the poor man into silence. Or something to that nature, because she is smiling and is perfectly content with this even as his brows furrow and he forms no response. Kiley nods, "perfect." She agrees for the schedule of lunch. The frown upon his lips is noted and she chuckles softly, "yes. You needn't ask as long as I know. And now I know, so it is perfectly fine." The woman never has plans set in stone, it seems, or at least her lunch time. "Do not frown, Nik." A gentle kiss brushes against his lips and then she's gathering her laptop. "Tomorrow." She promises, drifting into the lower caverns and to her room for more paperwork.

Nikolas can only nod to what Kiley says for the most part, even if it makes him appear to be some kind of idiot. The important people in his life knew better and that was all that mattered. At mention of his frown, he lifts a hand to his face and idly rubs at the corners of his lips, as if willing them to turn the other way around. Though the hand drops away when she leans over him, gracing his those lips with a touch of her own. He can only watch in object silence as she then gathers up her laptop and head out, leaving the man with a hand lifting in a quiet farewell to her back. Once she's gone, he sighs heavily and opens up his own computer, scooting his chair in close and presses the power switch in order to power it up. "Vera," he whispers, stroking one side of the encasement surrounding the display of the device, brows knit. "It's just you and I tonight." A sigh, long and heavy before setting finger to the keyboard and getting to work.
