Feeding A Bluerider

Western Weyr - Kitchen
Perhaps you followed your nose here.. the cooking aromas are tempting. This is the main kitchen of the Weyr. At any time of the day or night you find cooks and drudges busy making meals and preparing foodstuffs for storage for later use. The cavern has been shaped into a huge room with a domed ceiling. The huge ovens and cooking stoves line the outer wall, their perpetual fires fueled by natural gas from a nearby well. Vent holes pierce the cavern walls, keeping the room amazingly clear of smoke. The inner wall has long counters of smooth stone, carved from the walls. You see a large, heavy looking metal-clad door. This is the large cold storage room, much like a man-made ice cave. The walls are made of volcanic rock, known for it's insulating properties. The heat exchanger is also powered by natural gas.

The evening's light is fading, and in these hours after dinner, and the leftover platters have returned to the kitchen to be cleaned, the staff working hard to finish preperations before they in turn are able to retire for the day. With the porridge put on for the next morning, and leftovers being packed away, Raevella is picking at the platters, having missed the main dinner hour for one reason or another. Talking cheerfully with some of the kitchen workers, she nods now and again, adding a comment here or there, even as she's reaching for a roll.

Transport duty meant late hours and long flights, and with a laden Brionnith having returned to the Weyr long after sunset, his rider is apt to just skip the caverns as her dragon is unpacked by the waiting ground crews and go right to the source of the meal, so to speak. She's definitely followed her nose in here, lured by the smell of packed leftovers and … porridge? "Ye got some food fer a starving rider?" comes her query as she enters the room. "There's nae much out there," a jerk of her thumb over her shoulder. "Except klah, and I need something more'n that in me belly."

Glancing up at the question as the one who enters is definitely not another kitchen worker come to clean up, Rae hesitates for a moment before smiling. "Of course, ma'am, if you don't mind picking, a bit.." A pause, she blushes, and she glances over her shoulder. "Otherwise, I mean, I'm sure they can get something together for you.." She tacks on hurriedly, less the platter of partial pieces of roast soaking in its juices and the basket of rolls not be to the rider's liking. "I mean, its not anything fancy, but it still tastes good." She, at least, has no problem stabbing at another tidbit of dinner.

"After a long day on the wing," Kasi puts in with a snort, "I'm nae likely t'be picky nohow." There's certainly something avid in her gaze when she alights it upon that platter of partial roast bits, so deliciously tempting and savory for one who's probably skipped a meal or two in the day. "Don't mind picking a'tall." She's going to do just that, using her fingers even, and after plucking a roll from the basket, and nearly tearing it in two, roast bits are stuffed into it. Like a sandwich, sort of. "Did nae need nothing fancy," she comments to Raevella, smiling a little as she licks the juice from her fingers. Someone was raised wrong! "Thank ye."

"Well, I learned the hard way not to assume anyone else wants this… even if its the best part, having sat there, and soaked.." Rae counters with a little smirk, piece of roll torn off to soak up some of the juices from the platter before its popped in her mouth. Giving the rider a moment to enjoy her meal, Rae grins as she leans on the chopping table. "Did you go anywhere exciting, today?" She asks, curiously, making idle conversation while cleanup continues around them, and the staff works at their appointed tasks.

Kasira eats! Ravenously. Poor woman, so much work to do in her day that she didn't have a moment to just stop and munch. She'd probably time it, were it something taught to blueriders, and were not it something frowned upon except in the case of dire emergencies. "Shells, gal," Kasi finally manages to say, once she's stopped stuffing her face and can use her mouth for more than chewing food, "I'm so hungry, I could eat a whole wher. Raw." Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration there. "It's good, no matter what it is." There's a pause, and the woman nods. "South Boll. Nerat and High Reaches. It's /cold/ in High Reaches." If that's exciting. "I'm Kasira, ye are?"

Raevella giggles a little as Kasira certainly enjoys her food, giving the platter a little push towards the bluerider, and the basket of rolls is scooted towards her as well, Rae lingering even as she finishes her own meal. "Eww.." She says with a wrinkle of her nose at the mention of raw wher, before she's offering a little inclination of her head - a half bow where she's seated upon her stool. "Rae… Er.. Raevella, ma'am." She offers at the question. "South Boll sounds nice, though…"

More food? Well, she won't mind another few rolls or more of those roast scraps. They were yummy, especially stewed in their own juices, the latter which is mopped up by a third dinner roll before Kasi declares herself satisfied. "Raw wher's a bit on the stringy side, I'd admit," the bluerider remarks. "Not like this," a nod at the platter. "Nice to meet ye, Rae.. vella." See, she'll use whole names, she really will. A nearby vacant stool is snagged and Kasi plops herself down on to it. "South Boll's a nice place. Have ye ever traveled?"

There's a pause as a larger woman bustles her way through the kitchen, pausing at the chopping block to slip two plates of pie down with a wink to the pair chatting before she's on her way again, and Rae is eagerly sliding her dessert towards her. The fork is waved for a moment, before she shakes her head. "Not further than Half Moon Bay… Born here, and been here all along." The Laundress wrinkles her nose a little. "I know its boring, but.."

Kasira's eyes glint with sudden brightness. Oh delightful! Oh pie! There's two plates, which means one's for her, and the bluerider reaches out to tug it to it's destined spot. The fork stabs downwards, pie lifted to lips and nommed on blissfully for a few bites before Kasi nods in understanding. "Time was, I thought I'd go no further than me family's fields. Came from a hold in the back of between." Did between really have a back? "That all changed when I got searched and taken to Igen Weyr. Have ye ever wanted to travel and see the world, Raevella?"

The pie is savored, with none of the rush to devour it that there was with the actual meal, and Rae lets a bite linger on her fork as she contemplates Kasira's question, lips pursed for a moment as she listens to the rider. "Who doesn't, ma'am?" Raevella asks with a little smirk. "At least I live here, so I can hear everyone talk when they get back. Makes it worth the work to be on duty in the caverns, really, to listen to people reporting back." A little, wistful sigh, and a smile and the fork finally finds its way to her mouth as she thinks.

Such delicious pie. Kasi doesn't set to on her deseert as if she were a dragon that had never eaten. Truly, it must be savored and enjoyed, each taste appreciated. "Ye got a point," she agrees with a nod. "Plenty of people have dreams of travelling and seeing the world." That the bluerider never expected to, that goes without saying. "Aye, living here gives ye a good place to listen. and see the peop0le who see the world." It's a trade off, one might expect. Munching stoically on pie for a moment or two, she finally ventures forth the question. "If ye could travel, what would ye do?"

Fork is set down gently as Rae considers the options that open up when traveling, contemplating it carefully. A glance over her shoulder at the few kitchen workers still present, and the Laundress is leaning closer, whispering softly as to not let herself be overheard. "Well, I mean.. I know that the food here is good, but.. I've heard that some places its… very different. I sort of want to try different things, if I was able to visit. Not that, uhm, the food here is boring." She says hurriedly, to avoid unintentionally offending anyone.

Kasira listens intently, her gaze on the younger woman as Rae speaks of culinary delights that might be found on other parts of Pern, the bluerider's avid gaze centered upon the laundress, the fork between her fingers carrying the remaining mouthfuls of pie to their intended destination. "Oh aye," she agrees at last with a bob of her head. "Tis many different flavors ye might find around Pern. Take Igen for example, rather spicy vittles that they have. " She's silent for a moment and then ventures a question. "Have ye any thought as to how ye might visit other places?"

The last bite of pie is scooped up with her fork, disappearing as an excuse to keep quiet, the laundress contemplating the answer to give. After a moment, she leans back, shrugging her shoulders and sighing a little. "As a little, I though.. Perhaps I'd join a craft, and travel as a Journeyman… But there ain't no craft for me." She gives a little smile and a shrug. "And, I don't want to burden any riders, even when they're headed out there anyway… And I have work to do here."

Kasira's fork clatters against the plate, the bluerider pushing it away from her before she studies Raevella with a long intent silence. "Ye seem like you have your plans made then," she begins. "But perhaps, ye might considering an alternative?" She pauses, takes a breath and reaches into her belt pouch to lay a white cord across the table. "Ye got me food," well, gave her rolls and scraps anyway, still, the bluerider noted it. "Bri's out there. Says he likes a gal who feeds up his rider. Would ye consider that?" she points at the cord. "Ye'd get yet chance to visit the world?" Someday.

Raevella tenses as the bluerider's fork clatters, and then the bluerider herself is regarding her, the teen's shoulder's instinctively lifting a little, waiting for a moment to hear what she assumes is going to be bad. But then, there's a white cord, and Rae's eyes are opened wide as she blinks at it, then at Kasira. "I… Of.. Of course, Kasira, ma'am.." She offers, her hand already reaching to grab at the cord, before the rider can change her mind and take it away.

"Splendid." Kasi gives a satisfied nod. She's just not quick enough to try and change her mind and snatch the cord away from the teen's fingers. And besides, if she did, that would just be mean. "We'll get ye set up in the barracks then. Lucky you won't have to move far." Sliding off her stool, Kasi beckons at Rae. "Right this way then."

Raevella is slipping off the stool, pausing for a moment to stack the pie plates, calling a quick thank you out to the one woman still remaining, before she's hurriedly following after Kasi, candidate cord curled in her fingers, as she heads off to get settled in her new role at the Weyr.
