What's To Come

Western Weyr - Viewing Galleries

Row after row of hard benches to sit on, with a good view of the sands below and the action that takes place there during every hatching.. Despite the times, people still come to see the new pairs formed and place bets on the outcome.

Early mornings means that many others aren't really gracing the galleries with their presence, making it the prime time for anyone who wants to see the eggs without too much of a crowd to go and do so. Kiley is among the few in the galleries so early in the morning, her laptop settled dutifully upon her lap as she types away. Though her gaze doesn't linger on the screen, as she's torn between typing and peeking at the eggs.. The sound of keys clicking along with soft conversation from the few that are gathered fills the area.

Oh yes, early morning is there for the sneaks, and Velrich makes his slow and careful way up into the galleries. There's a wary look given to the mostly empty space, finishing his ascension with hands stuffed into his pockets. Indeed, he heads down to get a better look at the eggs sitting there on the sands, gaze slowly traveling over the orbs there, inspecting…before he tilts his head toward Kiley. "You keep that with you all the time?"

Kiley lifts her gaze to examine the newly arriving Velrich with a slight tilt of her head. She smiles and quietly resumes her typing while he gets a better look of the eggs. This continues until he finally speaks and fingers come to a halt before her gaze lifts to settle upon him once more. "For the most part, yes. My laptop has all my work in it, as well as it being part of my livelihood, it is a wonderful companion." A soft chuckle, "he never whines or complains, and loves to work as much as I do." A brighter smile forms upon the woman's lips before her gaze is shifting past him and towards the eggs settled on the Sands. "I wanted to write about the eggs before we get to touch them and know them."

Velrich gives Kiley something of an odd look, although he shakes his head and turns back to looking at the eggs again. "Sounds cold and rigid, to me." He does finally sit down though, leaning back on the row behind him to relax. "But then, I prefer the company of a gryphhawk and quiet forest, so I don't suppose I'm any better." There's a start, however, one that has him sitting up again to /look/ at Kiley. "Touch them. We're touching them?"

"Cold and rigid is better than some things," Kiley muses, "emotions complicate things while computers are simple, forever to be understood by simply opening them up and seeing what is inside. They don't lie, hate, or feel any sort of human emotion." The computer crafter smiles and offers a slight shrug, "everyone has their preferences. But, being human you have to deal with the emotions and whatever comes with those." When he looks at her, she carefully meets his gaze and nods firmly. "We're going to touch them when they are harder. And then, we'll learn the fractions of their personality. It may be the smallest part, or the biggest part of them, but we won't know until they Hatch."

There is yet another slightly odd look given from Velrich, but the man does sigh after a short time. "And here I thought I would only have to deal with..down there..once." He shakes his head though, turning a thoughtful stare onto the eggs below, simply looking them over again. "I guess there's a lot I don't actually know."

Kiley nods in understanding, slightly closing the laptop so she may better watch her fellow candidate with a thoughtful stare. "The heat isn't too bad. Sometimes you tend to forge that it's there when touching the eggs." The candidate nods once more and lifts the screen once more to resume typing. "If you've been a wanderer and have never really stopped in a Weyr for a long period of time, then it is understandable. And there's still a lot more to learn about being on the Sands. And then as a Weyrling you learn to be a rider. Then as a rider you learn to be in your wing. There is a lot to learn." Her gaze settles upon him once more, "I think you'll be fine, however."

Velrich snorts, although the sound comes out as more of a faint laugh than anything. "That's..a lot to learn." He does shake his head though, fingers tapping on his seat as he studies the eggs, glancing from time to time toward Kiley. "A period of time? More like never. Been no need for it, until now. Things are quite a bit..different here." Feet slide just a bit across the ground as he shifts his position, better able to look at either the other candidate or the sands. "Guess I'll find out when the time comes."

"It is." Kiley agrees, smiling wider as he looks towards her. "Well, you'll learn, then. I believe they do lessons for the candidates who haven't been in the Weyr before, just basics to learn how things work. And then there's more as Weyrlings." The computer crafter considers and then settles into typing again with a slow pace so to listen more carefully to the other. "Mhm. But, it never really hurts to prepare. Touching the eggs… It is like they are in your head."

Velrich lifts a brow slightly at that, smirking. "Don't put everything on what I'll learn as a weyrling. That's not something that's happened yet." He doe sit up though, turning fully sideways on the bench to watch Kiley. "The dragon that searched me. She..did that, I guess. It felt really strange and everything." Fingers reach up just a bit, sliding into his hair to give his scalp a bit of a scratch. "And we have to touch things that do that?"

Kiley chuckles softly, "no. But, it is simply a fact. Whether you do, or you don't, the weyrlings will learn." Pause, "will you return to wandering if you don't Impress?" Curious, she turns her gaze to focus solely on Velrich. "I've never had a dragon speak in my head before, but, it must be the same… Somewhat. The eggs are immature, though, so they probably aren't as strong?" There's a nod and she offers him another smile, "it isn't too bad. Depending on the personality, I suppose. I wouldn't worry too much?"

"I'm not worrying." Defensive? Perhaps. But Velrich shrugs just a bit and tilts his head to look off at the sands again. "I just don't like not knowing what I'm walking into." There's a shake of his head though before the young man finally stands up again, hands returning to their spots in his pockets. "I've got work to do, though.. It's getting later now."

There's a shrug for his statement, not arguing with him at all while Kiley's gaze drifts down to her laptop. "Well, you know some of it now? I'm curious to see what they're all like and to see how they respond to us." A slight twitch of a smile settles upon her lips. "Right. I should probably get something to eat and then see if I have morning chores or evening." Though she makes no move to leave, she lifts her gaze again to offer a smile. "It was nice chatting with you, Velrich." Then, she nods a farewell before resuming her typing in a quicker speed.
