Challenging Day Requires Challenges

Half Moon Bay Weyr - Living Cavern
Here is the center of Weyr life, the living caverns. These two main rooms were man-shaped from smaller caves, and are joined by a carved arch with depictions of dragons in flight and dolphins leaping in swirling waves. One room has many round stone and wooden tables and a stone fire-pit instead of a hearth. Over the round-walled, gas fired pit is a large conical hood made of polished bronze, with reliefs of dragons with their riders flying over ships guided by dolphins. This hood and chimney keeps the room smoke-free. Through the archway is an enormous hall, with long tables and benches, some carved from the rock floor, many crafted of wood. This room is a combination dining and meeting hall, and can seat over 300 comfortably. Above both rooms, angled shafts lined with polished metal bring in sunlight during the day. Electric lights also burn, day and night.

It's mid-morning at Half Moon Weyr, the breakfast rush in the living caverns has died down. Now it's the late risers coming out for breakfast, or in the case of Nolan, A candidate with a day off. After sleeping in and walking down to the beach in the morning, the young smith now sports a few firelizard. Though his blue and green seem nowhere in sight at the moment the newly hatched bronze quietly chews on little meat scraps as the smith stuffs himself on pancakes and bacon.

By rights Lukhanyo's entrance should be accompanied by some suitably dramatic music, after all he is doing his best to sneak in - but at well over six feet tall it's not an easy task, and he does rather look silly. But he tries at least, and even manages to make it halfway across the room before he stands upright and begins to walk normally. "Shells Nolan, you collecting the set?" Without asking permission, or even pausing really, he flops down on a seat next to the other candidate. "This one got a name yet?"

Nolan grins at Lukhanyo, the bronze giving a few chirps at the crafter before resuming his feast on the scrap of bacon. "Well, not on purpose. I was walking along the lagoon this morning and saw one egg alone in the sand. I brought it back to my room and before I knew it he was hatching. I decided to call him slick." He strokes the bronzes head with his finger, "Looks like he's going to be a big one." He eyes up Lukhanyo for a moment. "Wait, why are you here? Don't you have rider intern today?"

"Happens with the shiny ones. Start small and then…" Lukhanyo makes an exploding motion with his hands, accompanied by a little puff of air, "Need to reinforce your bed soon." And then there's that mention of interning, "Yeeeeeah, that's sort of maybe not a good idea. Someone somewhere is getting a hearty laugh out of it at least, just not me. Got paired with someone I'd rather not be around right now." Almost reflexively his hand lifts to brush at his cheek. An itch perhaps.

Nolan decides to at least continue eating his breakfast as he eyes the woodcrafter, a brow raised in question. "Oh? Tell me what does this tale involve?" Clearly the young smith knew his friend well enough to know it was likely a woman involved. "What did you do this time?"

Lukhanyo's hand goes immediately to his chest, and the fakest of fake shocked looks appears. "Me? What did /I/ do? You wound me Nolan! You know that I am a paragon of candidate virtue." Who recently made a deal to trade a haircut for a kiss, but that's not the point. Quieter, and a whole lot more seriously than is normal for the big woodcrafter, he adds, "Let's just say some people don't entirely like the truth."

Nolan eyes Luka, "Alright, now you have to tell me the whole story." Clearly the smith is interested if his woodcrafter friend who normally avoids being serious takes on a more serious tone. "What exactly is going on?"

Lukhanyo sighs, serious tone turning into serious looks for a moment, "It's my mother, okay? She's… ugh… and… yeah." Eloquent he is not, for once. "It's complicated." For a second it seems like he's done, like he won't share more then he adds, "She wasn't happy I got Searched, made a sarcastic comment or twelve, so I made one back which is completely not like me as you know, got a slap for my trouble. And there ends the sorry saga of my family."

Nolan gives a soft sigh, before shaking his head. "Why was your mother so against you being searched? For all she knows your lifemate could be on the sands and we all know what happens to a young hatchling if their lifemate isn't there to impress them." He cuts his pancake with more force then he should causing the bronze to screech at him. "sorry, little one I got carried away." With a sigh as he ran his hand through his hair. "I'm sorry to hear about that mate."

"She's…." Lukhanyo shrugs, "I dunno, I guess she'd given up on me Impressing. Or she just doesn't want me doing it here or something. She's… complicated. Shells this is depressing. You gonna share those pancakes or are they just for you and squidge there?" Topic… changed.

Nolan laughs before passing some pancakes over to the other crafter. "Well then, what's your plans for the day? Your welcome to join me but I doubt you would like to join in on my workout routine." Clearly the smith wasn't his size due to just genetics and working the forge.

Lukhanyo manages to 'borrow' a fork from one of the other tables, using it to cut up his pancakes. "I think I might partake in a little hiding. Followed perhaps by some sneaking about, and if I can find time a nap." His interest has been caught though, "Workout routine? if it involves running you're on your own, lifting things though… that I can do."

Nolan laughed at the other man for a moment. "It's not a lot of running, just a short jog up the beach before I switch to weights. Can't let one part of your body get stronger then any other." He gives another strip of bacon to the new flit before passing a few strips to Lukhanyo. "Eat up cause I don't do light weights."

Lukhanyo laughs, though makes no complaint about the added bacon. "Bring it on. I used to carry trees about Smithy, a few weights are nothing." There's a definite challenge in both tone and the sudden appearance of a nickname, "Already been told off once or twice for hanging from the door frames like a giant spinner."

Nolan laughs, "Only trees? Have you ever carried heavy beams and doors of iron?" Oh no, with these two muscle bound candidates the whole weyr could be overturned in their quest to see who could lift the most.

Lukhanyo waggles his fork towards Nolan, "It's not called hardwood for nothing you know. Chuck those things about all the time. Like it's nothing." Bragging? Probably, but you never know with crafters. "So where shall we meet for this challenge then young Nolan? Somewhere you won't get too embarrassed when you cry when I beat you."

Nolan laughed outloud. "Well we will have to make sure it's close so you can run back to the barracks after I demolish you." The young smith laughs as he stands up the bronze curled around his neck. Cleaning up his plate before coming back to the table. "It's down by the lagoon in a hour. See you then!" The young crafter jogs out of the cavern waving back to his friend.
