Half Moon Bay Weyr - Candidates' Barracks
Carved from a natural bubble in the volcanic stone, this small dorm room has room enough to hold around two dozen occupants comfortably. Along the walls are stationed sets of cots and clothes presses, each made up to the standards of the weyrwoman. Above, the soft white light from electric lamps cast down during waking hours.

Twilight hours. All the candidates are asleep except one.

Emiallis is awake, sitting in one of the rocking chairs set up to observe the aquariums, with a small wooden foot rest to help her set the chair to rocking. A full grown and powerfully build blue is sitting on her knees for the moment since her lap is taken up by a pair of books and a pen.

The creatures seem to be more active at night. That one is jotted down in the log book to her team's squid tank. Always alone.

She crosses that last statement out and writes it in the second book, trying her best to scribble it out in the first. Before she sets aside her personal one, and continues on with the observations in the first.

The glow is soothing. It gives just enough light off in this sort of concentration that I don't need a glow basket to see what I'm writing. Which is a small comfort, considering everyone else is asleep.

For a long time, Emiallis just sits in the chair, rocking it gently back and forth as she watches the squids swim in their confined space. Eventually, the blue firelizard has enough of not being paid any attention, and flies to the top of the tank, putting the tip of his muzzle into the shimmering water. One of the squids has the audacity to smack that intruding muzzle with a tentacle, and the blue retreats with an indignant hiss to his mistress' shoulders, smearing her neck and cheek with the shimmer.

Unknown if they're territorial, or just curious about things that come into their waters.

With a soft sigh, Emiallis stands up from the chair, depositing the book and pen where another can pick them up, and retreats back to her cot, pulling the curtain shut and settling down for the night.
