Description
Average in height, her youthful and tomboyish build is slim but slightly toned though some may venture to call her thin. Her long, oval shaped face is framed by thick and long auburn wavy hair that tumbles down past her shoulders if left unbound. Large, round and bright blue eyes are set above a small rounded nose and a thin-lipped mouth completes her plain and comely features.
The clothes she wears are often simple, if not a little worn. Most times, she wears a plain off-white tunic; the sleeves cut short and the curved neckline at a modest height. Overtop she wears a thin black leather vest and a full-length blue linen skirt completes the ensemble. On her feet and hidden by the skirt are a pair of black sandals or scuffed shoes, depending on location and weather.
Personality
On the outside, Kaliena appears humble and light-hearted, perhaps a little naïve for her age when truthfully she’s smart, and quick of wit and eager to learn if put in the right situation. She can be brisk in her politeness and a littler awkward around those of rank. At times and if under too much stress, her wit will lead to sarcasm or some snarky remark that sometimes can be ignored and passed off as a youthful outbursts and other times resulting in a reprimand. Underneath lies toughness and a tomboy streak to her, suppressed from her upbringing in a strict small cothold, but slowly coming to surface as she comes of age and is now free to handle her own life. Despite her seemingly easy-going attitude, Kaliena comes with her faults, namely her issues with handling criticism or failure. The slightest of reprimands will cause the young woman to flinch, while a raised voice or harsher scolding will be taken to heart and wound her more then it should. She is also strangely distrustful of men, though she does her best to hide it. Kaliena will be polite but coolly detached from them and often seek out companionship or friendship from older women or girls more her age. And aside from hiding her past, Kaliena also hides some quirks that she is more or less ashamed of. Prone to short instances of insomnia or anxiety driven restlessness, she has never sought help, too embarrassed and fearful over the judgment it may bring and instead struggles to deal with her own “demons” of sorts alone.
History
Kaliena's history is a little long, so for easier viewing pleasure, I've split it up into sections.
Born the youngest and last child to Ilentho and Kenali, a fisherman and a common hold woman in a small, desolate and backwater cothold north of Torince Hold in the Emerald Isles, Kaliena’s early life was simple at best but not without hardship. Little love was shared between her parents by the time she was born, with Ilentho being strict of hand and mind, bitter and often verbally abusive and demeaning not only to his wife but also towards both his sons and his lone daughter. While her father primarily ignored her, he seemed a little lenient to Ilenki, the eldest son but crueler to Kelthero, which led to her second brother befriending her out of mutual and growing distain for their father. Kelthero would protect her when he could, from both Ilentho and their eldest brother Ilenki. The sibling bond that formed between them was Kaliena’s only true sense of family and one that was broken when the family took their annual trip to Torince Hold.
Too young to remember most of the details, Kaliena only knows that her brother’s temper got the best of him. Kelthero had begun to change in the recent turns, withdrawing and lashing out against others, often picking fights with the other cothold or holder boys. Whenever Kaliena tried to press him about it, he would only ruffle her hair and give her some weak reassurance, leaving the young girl worried and confused over her brother’s downwards change in behavior. So on that night, Kaliena had begged him to get something to eat. Left in his care, as usual, Kelthero oblidged her request. Everything would had been fine, were it not for a drunken local man’s comments and subtle insults towards their cothold and family. Kaliena, too young to understand what was implied, was unable to keep her brother’s temper from flaring and the fight that ensued deeply upset the young girl. The next morning, after Ilentho publicly disowned Kelthero, Kaliena became distraught as her only friend and true family was roughly severed from her as they left back for home, leaving her brother behind.
Left now with no one to protect her, Kaliena withdrew into herself, her relationship with her family (even her mother, at this point) became strained. She would do her chores and help around the cothold in an almost sullen silence, speaking only when necessary and doing her best to avoid Ilentho and Ilenki as much as possible. She kept few friends; most of them older women of the cothold and even then the relationship were never very close. Her resentment also turned to her lost brother Kelthero, and her anger as well. All that befell her, she blamed on him. But she kept this all to herself, learning to cope on her own and the Turns progressed slowly one after the other. Just as she neared her fourteenth Turn and on the cusp of adulthood, a stranger arrived to their cothold. Thankfully, Ilentho and Ilenki were at sea and her mother otherwise occupied with chores. It was Kaliena who greeted the guest, only to be surprised to find he was from Torince Hold and had a parcel for her.
Suspicious, she accepted it and quickly hid it in her small room. When it was safe, she opened it and discovered a pink dragon plushy inside, along with a simple hand written note. It was from her brother, now a candidate at Western Weyr. A surge of anger and bitterness almost had her burning both the letter and gift, but Kaliena held her hand and secretly hid the toy, while shredding the note unanswered. Its arrival had broken open old wounds, just as the young girl was beginning to accept her lot in life, suppressing herself to cope. Yet at the same time, she found the secret knowledge of her brother’s existence and contact thrilling – an act of rebellion against her father, who had restricted their visits even to Torince Hold. Ilentho would go, sometimes with Ilenki. But Kaliena and her mother were always left behind. Now she had something akin to power against him and that alone fueled the events to pass.
A few months later, news would come that Ilentho had died while out at sea, along with the rest of the crew of the small fishing ship. Rumors abounded on how it happened, some even claiming it to be suspicious. Kaliena showed little grief (most likely sowing a few rumors there as well) and began to dread the oncoming days as her brother Ilenki took control of the cothold as part of his inheritance. Just as strict and at times crueler then their father, Kaliena became desperate. By chance or fate, she came across the visitor again, while walking back from a neighbouring cothold. A brief discussion led her to discover that the man was in fact a friend of sorts to Kelthero. Novaris, a Journeyman Healer, had befriended her brother when he struggled to rebuild his life in Torince Hold. Despite her resentment towards him, Kaliena secretly worked out a plan to send a letter through Novaris to Kelthero explaining the death of their father and his withheld inheritance. She hoped now that he would come back, at least to claim her and her mother. What Kaliena didn’t expect, however, was to find out her brother had Impressed and was now a weyrling to a bronze dragon. There would be no help from him, though he promised to try. Instead, he asked her to try and move to Torince Hold or as far from Ilenki as she could.
Disappointed and discouraged, Kaliena fell back to her usual routine as she struggled to formulate a plan. The thought of leaving the cothold, as much as she disliked it, was a daunting and frightening idea. It took a few more secret visits from Novaris before she gained the courage and confidence. Her pleas to her mother, however, fell on deaf ears. The woman, despite her treatment there, would not leave. But neither did she stop her daughter or inform Ilenki of her plans. It was perhaps the one and only time she truly respected her mother and before her will could break, Kaliena packed up her meager belongings and fled. Meeting with Novaris, he escorted her to Torince Hold where she took on small odd jobs in order to support herself. As she struggled to come to terms with her decision, the stress of being alone and a lifestyle change, Kaliena began a tentative back and forth conversation through letters with Th’ero.
When news came that he had become Weyrleader to Fort, Kaliena grew sullen again. Their previous plans of having her come to Western Weyr seemed to be out of the question, despite Th’ero encouraging her to do so. She felt comfortable in Torince Hold, though not entirely safe. The concept of going from Hold to Weyr frightened Kaliena and Th’ero’s mention of his friends being able to help her did nothing to sooth her worries. Instead, it only flared her resentment towards him and her letters became increasingly shorter and infrequent. With the strain now growing between her and Th’ero, Ilenki’s visit to Torince Hold a sevenday later had Kaliena suddenly making a rash and bold decision. Not wanting to deal with the stress of even having a chance crossing with Ilenki and aiming to undermine Th’ero’s wishes, she again packed up her belongings.
If he wants me to be far away and safe from the cothold and in a Weyr then I’ll go to a Weyr. Kaliena thought and did so. Only it wasn’t Western she turned to – it was Benden. Furthest she could flee from either brother, she used what marks she had (and no doubt with some help from Novaris) to travel to the Weyr. Her rashness hadn’t prepared her though for the changes ahead. With no craft to speak of and what little knowledge she had, Kaliena wanted nothing to do with fishing or the sea but it left her drifting in a world she soon came to understand she knew very little about. So she settled for work in the lower caverns, doing every job from helping cook or prepare the meals, to laundry and generally helping where she could or was asked to do so. And she would have remained in Benden, if Kaliena hadn’t regretted her decision, feeling more alone and lost then she did when in Torince Hold. Homesick and heartsick, reluctantly, she contacted Novaris again and transport was arranged to bring her back to the Emerald Isles.
Part of her agreement to return however, was not to notify either of her brothers. Purposely leaving both in the dark, she feels comforted knowing she has a brief respite to control her own path. Her restlessness didn’t leave her in Torince Hold long however and soon Kaliena began to seriously consider her older brother’s offer. Without informing Th’ero, she gathers her belongings again and moves to Western Weyr. With him as Weyrleader of Fort and Ilenki too wary of the Weyr to follow her, Kaliena felt comfortable enough, despite the similar lifestyle shock. But with some familiarity, plus the knowledge that her home cothold is not entirely inaccessible should she wish to return, she finds herself adjusting though each day brings it’s own trials. She has much to learn and does her best to keep a low profile as she struggles to find her place, one of her own choosing.

Firelizards
Cursed and Lonely Brown Beast
If ever a firelizard were to look more furred than suede, this brown is the one. His damp-earth colored hide is subtly patterned with lighter and darker shades, creating an incredible illusion of fur across his stocky form. Only his paws and wings are free of this coloring, leaving the former simply brown while the latter are darkened with a faintly rosy hue. When extended his wings tend to cup forward, mantling like a cloak around him.
Born to the Wilds Green Mockingjay
Nearing the largest size for a green, she still holds all the agileness and sleekness her color is best known for. She carries her slender and lithe form with a surprising grace and confidence, but her whirling eyes are always watching the world with a wary and suspicious look and never does her frame seem wholly relaxed. Bright eye catching lime green spreads out over her back, from her wedged shaped head and down the curve of her neck, pooling over her wings and down to the very tip of her forked tail. From this lime green, the hue gradually darkens to a richer forest green along her muzzle, throat, chest and the curve of her toned sides and limbs. The same is repeated on her wings, the edges dipped in a darker green that lends a stark, but subtle, contrast. Similarly, her legs end in the same darkened hue to complete the overall effect and lending a gentle beauty to her, despite the toughness her behavior and build suggest.
Northern Lights Blue Tuaisceart
Small and slim is the general structure of this blue firelizard. He isn't a very impressive sight structurally as he seems a little bony and could probably cause some discomfort with small bony limbs. But his coloration makes up for that fact. At first, even that isn't anything special to behold. His paws, legs and underside of his throat and jaw are coated in a dusty blue-gray color, much like a mountain side, dusted with snow. At the tops of his shoulders and thighs the gray hue gives way to the darkness of a clear night's twilight, speckled lightly with bright blue specks that could be called stars. The real beauty of his coloration comes when he spreads his gangly wings, revealing brilliant turquoises, rich indigo almost turning to the shade of purple and cerulean highlights swirling in the canvas of dark twilight membranes.
Dragon
Fly Fly Away Blue Ujinath
This small blue dragon is lithe and limber. Thin of frame, there is no extra girth added to him, his limbs are fit with adequate musculature without being overdone. A long whip-like tail protrudes from strong hips and moves with ease to adjust his weight as needed. Broad wings fold neatly at his back. Cerulean blue washes over the hide of this dragon. Flecks of white give his flesh some texture, but are so small that they are indistinguishable even from a few paces. The ridges on his back fade into a deeper blue that runs down his spine and over the edges of his wings, creating an outline of his skeletal structure when viewed from above. A slender head ends abruptly in a squarish and angular snout. Deep set eyes whirl behind large ridges, making them look larger than they are and somewhat cat-like. Splayed paws have toes arranged in a V-shape, with feet a bit larger than the average dragon in terms of his size. Razor sharp claws of boney white sit on his feet, a dangerous foam sitting at the edge of the sea of blue. Curved and white, they look like polished marble in the sun.
